10U Game vs Mound magic
11:42 - “Early in the game leads vs. a lefty. “
When taking our 3-shuffle lead vs. a lefty early in the ball game (1st time through order), we will want to take a ‘one-way’ lead while we are just “discovering” his pickoff move . Once we discover his pickoff move, our coaches will want to make a decision on how we play the game. In the video below our runner, jumps out to an over-extended lead, not consistent with the expected 3-4 step shuffle and we get picked off. We do not want to get over-extended on our lead unless we are taking 4 steps on a lefty when stealing on first move. This play results in a big momentum swing for the opposing team early in the ball game, making it a 1-2-3 inning for their pitcher.
12:02 - “4 Shuffle Lead + First Move Steal on LHP”
Our base runners should take 4 shuffles from the base in the same fashion they would take their normal lead. Our baserunner was a bit delayed in his take off here A good cue that we will teach is, we want to see the boy’s hands to drive towards the 2nd base bag when the pitchers front leg rises, going left over right driving into the ground with the right foot. This play requires a 100% sprint and our baserunners should be prepared to slide to the back side of the base away from the tag.
***Training quick twitch movements with reaction drills. If we are not able to take the right leads and get there safely….. 90 ft sprints and shuttles are coming. Fair? (:
