9U Game #46 vs 10U Knights elite black
Situation #1: Top of the 1st. Runner on 1st and 3rd. We pick the runner off at 1B and want to take the out early in the game even if we give up the run.
Things we did very well;
1.) We got the out.
2.) Good hold and timing on pick by P
3.) Good catch, tag at SS down to the feet.
4.) LF & CF are moving to back up potential throw to 2B.
Things we need to point out and improve;
1.) Pitcher has to follow the pickoff attempt to cover the empty base at 1B.
2.) When we have the runners hips turned and committed towards the advanced base (2nd in this situation) we need to give up the baseball sooner and the SS needs to come in front of the base for a quick catch tag eliminating any chance of runner getting to the base.
Situation #2: Bases loaded. Runner at 3B walking lead to set up the hips already to home plate to beat the throw from 3B.
Things we did very well;
1.) We allowed the pitchers arm to cross the face before we started our secondary lead.
2.) Our runner at 3B, walked down the line with hips already in position to “go”
3.) Our runner at 3B put in a great effort and went full speed into home with a slide - putting pressure on catcher.
Situation #3: PFP
Things we did very well;
1.) Good attempt by our pitcher
2.) Picked up the ball with our hand
3.) RF is moving and backing up the play at 1B
Things we need to point out and improve on;
1.) 1st baseman needs to get to 1B bag earlier and in a lower position (expect a bad throw when it becomes a loose ball play).
2.) Pitcher could have gathered himself a bit more and got underneath his feet a bit better to make a more accurate throw.
Situation #4: 1st and 3rd (Cut Play)
We want to make sure on 1st and 3rd plays our 3Bmen ALWAYS go back to the bag at 3B. This will keep the runner at 3B a lot closer preventing him from taking off on the throw because there is now a chance we throw it to 3rd with someone on the bag. This will cause hesitation and delay by opposing coaches to send the runner home with a 3rd baseman on the bag.
Situation #5: Backing Up 3B as a P on a triple
Here our pitcher gets caught “watching the game” and our 2Bmen goes out as the cutoff instead of the SS.
In this situation; it is a 3 run ball game at the time of the pitch. The opponent hits a ball into the RCF gap scoring 1 run. Here we want to see our 2Bmen cover 2B and our SS to go out as the cutoff. Remembering that we want the first throw to be the longest throw of the 2 throws in a cutoff. Our pitcher should also be in a backup position behind the 3B bag (deep enough to retrieve any wild throw or deflection) on this catch tag play.
Without backing up, we give up an “easy run” with 2 outs in the inning making it now a 1 run game instead of 2. Next batter would fly out to RF.
Situation #6: Up — Down — Around
On this “Inside leg lift” our goal is to catch the runner breaking for 3rd base. It is NOT intended for a throw to 2B bag. It is intended to be one throw to 3B for a catch/tag. Pitchers, remember to break the hands on the way down. Keeping hands together makes this a very average move. The hand break is what will get opposing baserunners and coaches “slipping”. Shortstop does not break to the bag on this play until the rundown is initiated. Breaking too early from our SS will allow the 3B coach to signal “BACK”
Attached is both, an average move where the hands stay together and a very good move where the hands separate.
